Articulated Robot

An articulated robot is a robot arm built as a serial chain of rigid links connected by rotary joints, most commonly with six degrees of freedom so the end effector can reach arbitrary positions and orientations within its workspace, or seven for kinematic redundancy. It is the dominant industrial robot morphology, distinguished from SCARA, delta, Cartesian, and parallel architectures by its large dexterous workspace relative to footprint.

Why it matters for physical AI

Six- and seven-axis arms are the default embodiment for manipulation research and deployment alike, so their kinematics, singularities, and joint limits implicitly shape the action spaces of most learned manipulation policies.
