ASIMO

ASIMO is a humanoid robot developed by Honda and unveiled in 2000, the culmination of a research line begun in the 1980s with the E- and P-series prototypes. Standing about 130 centimeters tall, it demonstrated stable bipedal walking, stair climbing, running, and basic object handling using zero-moment-point-based control, and became for two decades the public face of humanoid robotics before Honda ended development in the late 2010s.

Why it matters for physical AI

ASIMO defined the model-based era of humanoid control whose limitations, careful pre-programmed motion and fragility outside structured demos, motivated today's learning-driven approaches to general-purpose humanoids.
