Compliant Manipulation

Compliant manipulation is the execution of manipulation tasks while regulating interaction forces through mechanical or controlled compliance, rather than commanding pure position trajectories. Typical examples include peg-in-hole insertion, surface wiping and polishing, door opening, and assembly, where task geometry constrains motion and rigid position control would generate excessive forces. Implementations combine impedance or admittance control with strategies that exploit contact constraints to funnel uncertainty.

Why it matters for physical AI

Most economically valuable manipulation involves sustained contact, and pairing learned policies with compliant control layers is the prevailing recipe for making such skills robust on real, imperfectly perceived hardware.
