Extrinsic Contact
Extrinsic Contact is contact between a grasped object and the external environment, as distinct from the intrinsic contacts between the gripper and the object itself. Manipulation research uses extrinsic contacts deliberately, pressing a held part against a surface, edge, or fixture to pivot, slide, or reorient it, a strategy termed extrinsic dexterity by Dafle and Rodriguez. Estimating and controlling these contacts typically combines force-torque sensing, tactile feedback, and contact-mode reasoning.
Why it matters for physical AI
Simple parallel-jaw grippers can achieve hand-like reorientation by borrowing dexterity from the environment, and insertion and assembly tasks hinge on regulating extrinsic contact forces, a frontier for tactile-aware learned policies.
