Gyroscope
A gyroscope is a sensor that measures angular velocity about one or more axes; in robotics it is nearly always a MEMS vibrating-structure device packaged with accelerometers in an inertial measurement unit. Gyroscope readings integrate to orientation estimates that drift due to bias instability and noise, so they are fused with accelerometers, magnetometers, or vision in attitude filters and visual-inertial odometry. Higher grades, such as fiber-optic gyros, serve demanding navigation applications.
Why it matters for physical AI
High-rate rotational sensing is indispensable for balance control in legged robots, camera stabilization, and inertial odometry; gyro noise characteristics directly bound how long a robot can navigate without external position fixes.
