Kinect
Kinect is Microsoft's line of consumer RGB-D cameras, launched in 2010 for the Xbox using structured-light depth sensing, followed by the time-of-flight Kinect v2 and the Azure Kinect developer kit. Its low price brought dense depth sensing to robotics labs at scale, catalyzing a wave of research in 3D mapping (including KinectFusion), skeleton tracking, and RGB-D perception.
Why it matters for physical AI
Kinect's commoditization of depth sensing reshaped robot perception research and established the RGB-D observation paradigm that today's manipulation datasets and sensors still follow.
