A manufacturing execution system (MES) is the software layer that manages and monitors production on the factory floor, sitting between enterprise resource planning systems and shop-floor equipment. It handles work order dispatch, routing, traceability, quality data collection, and equipment status. Robots and automated cells integrate with the MES to receive jobs, report completions and defects, and synchronize with upstream and downstream operations.
