Open-Loop Grasping

Open-loop grasping is a grasp pipeline that perceives the scene once, computes a grasp pose, and executes the reach-and-close motion blindly without further visual or tactile feedback. It is simple and fast but fails when the object moves, the pose estimate is off, or the gripper disturbs the object during approach. Closed-loop alternatives track the object visually or react to tactile signals through contact.

Why it matters for physical AI

The gap between open- and closed-loop grasp success on cluttered, moving, or deformable objects is a major argument for reactive learned policies over perceive-then-execute pipelines.
