Slip Ring
A slip ring is an electromechanical component that transmits electrical power and signals across a rotating interface using conductive rings and sliding brushes or contacts, allowing a joint to rotate continuously without twisting cables. Slip rings appear in spinning LiDAR units, pan-tilt turrets, robot wrists, and cable reels; contactless variants pass data inductively or optically to avoid brush wear. Bandwidth, channel count, and contact noise are the key specifications.
Why it matters for physical AI
Cable management quietly limits joint range on many arms; continuous-rotation joints enabled by slip rings remove wind-up constraints that otherwise complicate motion planning and teleoperation.
