Autonomous Mobile Robot (AMR)

An autonomous mobile robot is a wheeled or legged platform that navigates freely using onboard localization, mapping, and path planning rather than fixed guidance infrastructure, replanning around people and obstacles in real time. Typical AMRs fuse LiDAR, cameras, and odometry for SLAM-based navigation in warehouses, hospitals, and factories, with fleet management software coordinating hundreds of units; examples include Locus and MiR platforms and Amazon's warehouse fleets.

Why it matters for physical AI

AMRs are among the most widely deployed autonomous systems in commerce, and their mature navigation stacks form the mobility layer onto which learned manipulation is being added to create useful mobile manipulators.
