CE Marking
CE Marking is the mandatory conformity mark indicating that a product placed on the European Economic Area market meets applicable EU health, safety, and environmental requirements. For robots this historically meant the Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC, being superseded by the Machinery Regulation (EU) 2023/1230, alongside EMC and, where relevant, Radio Equipment directives. Manufacturers perform risk assessment, compile a technical file, and issue a Declaration of Conformity, often demonstrating compliance via standards like ISO 10218.
Why it matters for physical AI
Commercial deployment of robots in Europe is gated on CE conformity, and learned, adaptive behaviors raise novel questions in risk assessment that deployment teams must address in the technical file.
