Delta Robot
Delta Robot is a parallel-kinematic robot in which three arms with parallelogram linkages connect base-mounted actuators to a common end-effector platform, invented by Reymond Clavel at EPFL in the 1980s. Keeping motors on the stationary base minimizes moving mass, enabling very high accelerations. Delta robots dominate high-speed pick-and-place in food, pharmaceutical, and electronics packaging, and the architecture also appears in 3D printers.
Why it matters for physical AI
Deltas illustrate how parallel kinematics trades workspace volume for speed and stiffness, a design point learned pick-and-place systems increasingly target. Their sub-second cycle times set the benchmark that vision-guided sorting must meet in production.
