Pick and Place

Pick and place is the manipulation task of grasping an object at one location and setting it down at another, forming the core primitive of sorting, kitting, machine tending, and order fulfillment. Industrial variants range from high-speed delta robots moving hundreds of items per minute to perception-driven bin picking of unstructured parts, combining object detection, grasp selection, collision-free transfer motions, and controlled release.

Why it matters for physical AI

Pick and place is the most economically significant manipulation primitive and the usual first benchmark for new grasping methods, yet reliable handling of arbitrary novel objects at human speed remains unsolved.
