Emergency Stop (E-Stop)

Emergency Stop (E-Stop) is a fail-safe function, typically triggered by a prominent red mushroom button, that immediately removes hazardous energy or halts machine motion, overriding all other controls. Its design is governed by ISO 13850 and IEC 60204-1, which require direct-opening contacts, latching until manual reset, and stop categories defining whether power is cut instantly or after a controlled deceleration. E-stop circuits are implemented in safety-rated hardware independent of application software.

Why it matters for physical AI

Learned policies are treated as unverified software, so hardware safety layers like the e-stop remain the certified last line of defense that makes experimenting with and deploying such policies acceptable.
