Open X-Embodiment
Open X-Embodiment is a large-scale collaborative robot learning dataset, released in 2023 by Google DeepMind and more than twenty partner institutions, aggregating over one million real robot trajectories spanning 22 robot embodiments into a standardized format. The accompanying RT-X experiments showed that policies trained across embodiments outperform those trained on any single robot's data alone.
Why it matters for physical AI
It established cross-embodiment pretraining as the default recipe for robot foundation models; Octo, OpenVLA, and many subsequent policies train on it, making it robotics' closest analog to web-scale corpora.
