Painting Robot

A painting robot is an industrial manipulator that applies paint or other coatings to parts with a spray applicator mounted as its end effector. Deployed at scale in automotive body shops since the 1980s, painting robots execute smooth, high-speed trajectories with tightly controlled standoff distance and flow rate to achieve uniform film thickness. Most are explosion-protected designs certified for operation inside flammable spray-booth atmospheres.

Spray painting is a canonical example of trajectory optimization under process constraints, where coverage, film uniformity, cycle time, and material waste must be traded off along a continuous tool path.
