Teleoperation

Teleoperation is the control of a robot by a human operator who is physically separated from it, with operator commands mapped to robot motion through interfaces ranging from joysticks and VR controllers to kinematically matched leader arms and whole-body exoskeletons. Classical bilateral teleoperation adds force feedback so the operator feels remote contact. Low-cost leader-follower systems such as ALOHA and handheld devices like UMI have made teleoperation the dominant method for collecting robot manipulation demonstrations.

Nearly all high-quality manipulation training data behind current robot foundation models originates from teleoperated demonstrations, so teleoperation throughput, ergonomics, and fidelity directly bound how fast the field can scale imitation learning.
