ImageNet

ImageNet is a large-scale image dataset organized by the WordNet hierarchy, whose 1000-class ILSVRC classification benchmark catalyzed the deep learning era after AlexNet's 2012 result. Beyond the benchmark itself, ImageNet pretraining became the default initialization for perception backbones, and "an ImageNet moment for robotics" is shorthand for the field's search for similarly transformative shared datasets, motivating efforts like Open X-Embodiment.

Why it matters for physical AI

The dataset's history frames the central question of robot learning: whether pooled, diverse robot data can do for manipulation what ImageNet did for computer vision.
