SCARA Robot
A SCARA robot (Selective Compliance Assembly Robot Arm) is a four-axis manipulator with two parallel revolute joints providing motion in the horizontal plane, a vertical linear axis, and a wrist rotation, making it rigid vertically but compliant laterally. Invented by Hiroshi Makino at Yamanashi University in 1981, the architecture excels at fast, repeatable pick-and-place and vertical insertion tasks. SCARAs remain among the fastest and most precise arms for planar assembly work.

High-speed electronics assembly and kitting lines still favor SCARAs over six-axis arms, so learned policies targeting these domains must handle their restricted, planar workspace geometry.
